Tierra De León Wine

The Tierra de León denomination of origin is located in the southern province of León (Castilla y León), covering the areas of the Esla and Cea River, also integrating 19 municipalities of the province of Valladolid. The climate of this DO is not completely continental Atlantic, and it is quite cold, which vines love. There are great differences in temperature between the day and the night, with hot summers and cold winters.

The soils of the Tierra de León DO are ideal for wine-making because they make drainage of vines easier. The soil is found on alluvial terraces at a medium height and the vine roots penetrate easily into it. The soil also has low quantities of minerals.

The denomination of origin has a surface of 1,500 hectares of vineyards, in which 35 wineries produce wines. The varieties of red grapes cultivated are: prieto picudo, mencia, garnacha and Tempranillo. As regards the strains of white grapes, the ones the DO uses are: albariño, Verdejo, godello, palomino and Malvasia. In 2008, the wine production in Tierra de León rose to 3.2 million kilograms.
